For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Gal. 5:1)
Galatians Sermon Series
The theme of the book of Galatians is freedom; freedom is coming! Yet the people are not free. All around us people are enslaved to cruel bondage of one kind of another.
Join us for six weeks in the book of Galatians:
- May 29th – Galatians 1:1-12
- June 5 – Galatians 1:11-24
- June 12 – Galatians 2:15-24
- June 19 – Galatians 3:23-29
- June 26 – Galatians 5:1, 13-25
- July 3 – Galatians 6: 7-16
Film Reflections
Over the coming six weeks, as we reflect on this theme from Galatians together, we will also be screening three documentary films on three historical ‘freedom movements’ beginning this Thursday evening (through until the end of June). The documentaries will be screened twice. The first screening (3, 16 and 30 June) will be in the inner west at Phil Wilcox’s home (email infoATpaddington.church for info) and the second screening (10, 23 June and 7 July) will be in the Paddington rectory.
- June 2 and 9 at 7:30pm: Bonhoeffer (2003)
- June 16 and 23 at 7:30pm: King: A Filmed Record … Montgomery to Memphis (1970)
- June 30 and July 7 at 7:30pm: Freedom Stories (2016)
Bonhoeffer identified the central challenge he faced, with his students and the Christians of Germany under the Third Reich with a a searching question: “are we still of any use?”
We have been silent witnesses of evil deeds;
we have been drenched by many storms;
we have learnt the arts of equivocation and pretence;
experience has made us suspicious of others and
kept us from being truthful and open;
intolerable conflicts have worn us down
and even made us cynical.
Are we still of any use?”
These documentaries will inspire us to be creative in answering Bonhoeffer’s question.
